He had been out and about in the snow already on two legs, but he'd not had the opportunity to enjoy it on all four yet and he's not going to miss out on the chance now!
So, he hears them tussling, but it's more than apparent that the felines are playing and not fighting as he approaches. He stops at a safe enough distance to let them not his presence without crowding them.
